    Salvage Discarded Trees for Furniture

As the owner of Atlantic Fine Woods, sustainability is more than just a practice—it’s at the heart of everything we do. Our urban sawmill in Midtown Atlanta is dedicated to salvaging discarded city trees and turning them into stunning, timeless furniture.

One of our proudest achievements is capturing 1,410,000 pounds of carbon that would otherwise be polluting the atmosphere. Each tree we salvage helps combat climate change, making a real difference for the planet.

We’re also deeply committed to minimizing waste. Our workshop produces just one 55-gallon bag of trash every two months. We repurpose every offcut and scrap into valuable materials, and even our sawdust is put to good use—it’s sold to mushroom farmers who use it as a growing medium. This approach helps us stay as close to zero-waste as possible and ensures that every part of the wood is utilized in meaningful ways.

Beyond our workshop, we source wood locally to reduce transportation emissions and support our community. Every piece of furniture crafted from these urban-harvested trees tells a story of renewal and respect for the environment.

At Atlantic Fine Woods, our dedication to sustainability isn’t just a part of our business—it’s the driving force behind everything we do. It allows us to create beautiful, meaningful products while making a positive impact on the world.

Use Native Plants and Recycled Materials

As the owner of Classic Landscapes, sustainability is integral to how we operate. We use native plants and water-efficient designs in all our landscaping projects to reduce environmental impact and create landscapes that contribute to the local ecosystem. For example, our irrigation systems are custom-designed to the specific water needs of plants, promoting conservation. We also aim to reduce waste by recycling and composting materials used in our daily operations.

Through partnerships with local suppliers, we source sustainable and eco-friendly materials for hardscaping and construction. For instance, we used recycled concrete and stone in a recent patio installation and crushed gravel made from recycled glass for walkways in a commercial project. These sustainable practices resonate with our environmentally-conscious customers and have helped us win new contracts, like the landscaping of William Hawrelak Park.

Our team is passionate about sustainability, so we provide regular training on the latest eco-friendly techniques and materials. I'm proud we've cultivated a culture where everyone actively looks for new ways to make our business more sustainable. Focusing on sustainability hasn't just benefited the environment but has also driven our growth in a responsible way.

Optimize Delivery and Use Recycled Packaging

As CEO of GardenCup, sustainability is core to our mission. We use recycled and recyclable materials for all packaging and shipping materials. For example, our salad cups are made from PET plastic, the most recycle-friendly kind, and we recycle the liners and ice packs in each shipment.

We source organic, local ingredients whenever possible to cut down on emissions from long-distance transportation. Over 75% of our produce comes from farms within 100 miles of our kitchen. We also compost any food waste from our production processes.

To reduce waste, we optimize our delivery schedules and logistics to ensure the freshest product with the fewest shipments. We track key metrics like waste, emissions, and water usage to set environmental goals and hold ourselves accountable. Our customers appreciate these efforts, and it’s helped build a loyal base of eco-conscious clients. Focusing on sustainability has been crucial for our business and the planet.

Shift to Remote Work and Renewable Energy

As a SaaS company, one might assume that sustainability practices are not common in this industry. However, we have discovered ways to incorporate sustainability initiatives.

To begin with, we have shifted to a remote setup, significantly lowering our carbon footprint by eliminating daily commutes and the necessity for physical office spaces.

Moreover, our data facilities run on renewable energy sources to ensure that our digital operations leave minimal environmental impact.

Furthermore, we have introduced coding methods and optimized server usage to decrease energy consumption.

By integrating these sustainability measures into our business framework, I can say that we not only contribute to environmental preservation but also encourage stakeholders to embrace greener approaches.

    Use Durable Materials and Methods

As an experienced roofing contractor, sustainability has been key to our operations for decades. We only use durable, long-lasting materials and construction methods to minimize waste and impacts. For example, we hand-nail each shingle to ensure high-quality, watertight roofs that last 2-3 times longer than average. This significantly reduces the resources needed for repairs and replacements. We also carefully protect properties during installation and carefully clean up work sites, recycling virtually all waste.

Our commitment to quality and service means most of our business comes from referrals and repeat customers. By focusing on sustainability, we’ve built a reputation for roofing that stands the test of time. This sustainable approach has allowed my company to operate for over 35 years without a single insurance claim, benefiting both homeowners and the environment.

    Promote High-Efficiency HVAC Systems

We have integrated sustainability in a couple of different ways. We actively encourage our customers to opt for high-efficiency HVAC systems by providing comprehensive information on the benefits of these systems, such as lower energy consumption and reduced utility bills. We also offer incentives and rebates to make these upgrades more accessible. By doing so, we are able to help our clients save money and also contribute to reducing overall energy consumption in our community.

We also focus on responsible disposal and recycling of old HVAC equipment. When we replace or upgrade a system, we ensure that the old units are disposed of in an environmentally-friendly manner, adhering to all local regulations and best practices for recycling.

Within our office and operations, we've implemented practices to reduce waste and conserve resources. This includes everything from using digital documentation to minimize paper use to installing energy-efficient lighting and appliances in our facility.

This approach has resonated well with our clients, many of whom are increasingly conscious of their own environmental impact, and has helped us build a reputation as a forward-thinking and eco-friendly HVAC service provider.

Switch to Digital Proofing and Editing

When I decided to make DreamStarters Publishing more sustainable, I started by switching to digital proofing and editing, significantly reducing our paper usage. This change not only saved trees but also sped up our editing process. Another initiative was partnering with eco-friendly print-on-demand services, which cut down on waste by only printing books as they are ordered. One memorable instance was when we published a client's book on green entrepreneurship, using 100% recycled paper for the physical copies. It resonated deeply with our audience and highlighted our commitment to sustainability. Just like riding a motorcycle with the wind at your back, these changes have propelled us forward while keeping our environmental impact in check.

    Minimize Single-Use Plastics and Compost

For my florist business in Melbourne, one of the first steps I took was to minimize single-use plastics. Whenever I can, I opt for biodegradable wrapping materials and compostable pots. It not only helps the environment but also gives my arrangements a more natural look.

I also try sourcing my flowers locally, which reduces transportation waste and supports other small businesses in the area. Plus, I keep track of my inventory really closely to avoid over-ordering, which helps to reduce waste from unsold flowers. Any leftover blooms at the end of the week? I either compost them or donate them to local charities and nursing homes.

Another thing I’ve done is set up a recycling station in the shop. I encourage customers to return their vases or containers so they can be reused or repurposed. It’s great to see regulars getting involved! Overall, I've found that making these small changes not only aligns with my values but has also resonated positively with my customers. They appreciate knowing that they’re supporting a business that cares for the planet.

    Seek Out Sustainable Materials

During a time when it wasn't that common, we initiated including eco-friendly labels and stickers in our product lineup. As a sticker-manufacturing business, we recognized the importance of reducing our environmental footprint and sought out sustainable materials.

With wood pulp as its material, our eco-friendly stickers are compostable, ensuring their sustainability. We then print on it using certified compostable and vegan inks on our HP Indigo printer. I would say that—in addition to reducing our environmental impact—we saw an increase in customer interest and sales by implementing eco-friendly practices into our operations.

I think the shift towards sustainable materials resonated with our environmentally conscious customers, leading to higher engagement and repeat business. Furthermore, implementing sustainability practices has also had a positive effect on our company culture. Our employees are proud to work for a business that prioritizes the environment and is actively reducing its impact. This has led to increased employee satisfaction and retention, ultimately benefiting our overall business operations.

    Upgrade to Energy-Efficient Lighting

At our dental clinic, we have made significant strides in sustainability by upgrading to energy-efficient lighting and appliances. By replacing traditional bulbs with LEDs and ensuring all our equipment meets Energy Star standards, we've reduced our energy consumption substantially. This not only lowers our operational costs but also minimizes our environmental footprint.

    Offer Green Plumbing Services

Several years ago, I noticed a growing concern among our clients for more eco-friendly plumbing and water solutions. Instead of merely acknowledging their concerns, we began offering green plumbing services, which include things like the installation of solar hot-water systems and rainwater tanks. This reduces dependence on non-renewable energy sources and helps conserve water.

To help clients further cut down on water usage, we also install a comprehensive range of water-saving devices, such as dual-flush toilets and water-efficient showerheads. Additionally, rainwater harvesting systems are a great addition to supply gardens and toilets with water in a sustainable way. This new service focused on sustainability is appreciated by the community and can also help cut costs on water bills.

    Use Sustainable Materials and Packaging

At By Catalfo, since integrating sustainability into our business operations, it's now become something that is considered in all of our decisions. We began our sustainability journey by carefully assessing our operations to identify areas where we had opportunities to create positive change. Our initial focus has been on material selection, sourcing, and packaging. We're replacing traditional, less eco-friendly materials with sustainable alternatives like Livaeco™ Modal, a biodegradable fiber. Our priority is to choose materials and partners with third-party certifications. This gives us the assurance we need in knowing that verified sustainable practices and standards are in place. Additionally, we're committed to minimizing packaging waste through innovative design and the use of non-virgin, recycled materials. By taking these proactive first steps, we've successfully begun to integrate sustainability into our core operations without compromising the luxurious essence of the brand. By sharing our journey, we hope to inspire others to adopt sustainable practices as well.

    Offer Lab-Grown Diamonds

Barkev's commitment to sustainability is demonstrated by our lab-grown diamond collection. Lab-created diamonds are made in a controlled setting, eliminating the need for traditional mining, which can severely disrupt the environment. These gems are identical to natural diamonds in all ways—chemical, physical, and optical—but use fewer resources and create less by-product waste.

One way we show our dedication towards sustainability is through offering an extensive selection of engagement rings with lab-created diamonds. By choosing these gems, customers significantly decrease the carbon footprint usually associated with diamond extraction and processing. This sustainable approach not only prevents deforestation and destruction of animal habitats resulting from mining activities but also makes sure that our diamonds are conflict-free and ethically sourced, consistent with our brand ethos of responsible luxury.

We create high-quality, stunning jewelry that customers can wear proudly, knowing they represent sustainability, not just elegance. Every piece we make reflects our commitment to innovation in responsible luxury within the industry, thus reinforcing our mission to impact the planet positively.

    Use Integrated Pest-Management Practices

As the owner of Waltham Pest Control, sustainability is key to our operations. We use integrated pest-management practices, which focus on prevention and less-toxic methods before resorting to pesticides. For example, we seal entry points, improve sanitation, and install physical barriers to exclude pests whenever possible.

When pesticides are needed, we carefully select and apply the right chemicals for the infestation. We track the effectiveness and environmental impact of all our services. Last year, we reduced pesticide use by over 30% while improving customer satisfaction.

We also aim to reduce waste in our daily activities. We recycle paper, bottles, and batteries in our office and vehicles. We purchase reusable products instead of single-use plastics. And we donate or compost leftover bait and materials when possible.

Our customers and community appreciate these efforts. Focusing on sustainability has helped our business grow in an ethical, eco-friendly way.

    Switch to Eco-Friendly Cleaning Products

As a cleaning service company, we felt a responsibility to do our part in protecting the environment. This realization prompted us to shift from conventional cleaning products to eco-friendly alternatives. Traditional cleaning agents, laden with harsh chemicals, not only pose health risks to our staff and clients but also contribute significantly to environmental pollution. By swapping these out for green products, we have reduced our carbon footprint and created a safer, healthier working environment. These eco-friendly products are biodegradable, non-toxic, and just as effective, if not more so, than their chemical-filled counterparts.

The benefits have been immediate and impactful. Our clients appreciate the commitment to sustainability, often expressing relief over reduced allergies and skin irritations. Our staff, too, are happier knowing they aren't exposed to harmful substances daily. It's not just about the environment—it's about the well-being of everyone involved. This transition has reaffirmed our belief that businesses can thrive while championing sustainable practices. By prioritizing eco-friendly solutions, we're making a positive difference and setting a precedent for others in the industry.

    Optimize Service Routes

As the Field Area Manager for JDM Sliding Doors, we've been at the forefront of the sliding-door industry for more than 20 years. Our journey is more than just replacing doors; it's about implementing actions that benefit our community and the environment. I want to share how we've implemented sustainability into our business.

At JDM, minor improvements can have a significant impact. Recycling obsolete door materials is a crucial project that we have adopted. When we replace or repair sliding doors, we frequently discover that materials such as aluminum and glass still have a long life. Rather than discarding them, we sift and recycle them, considerably reducing landfill waste.

Another sustainable approach we've implemented is optimizing our service routes. Last year, we were able to reduce our gasoline use by 15% by effectively planning our job schedules and routes using software. This not only benefits the environment by lowering emissions, but it also increases our time on-site, which boosts client satisfaction.

We also focus on getting goods from local vendors. This benefits local companies while reducing our carbon footprint from transportation. It benefits both the economy and the environment.

These practices demonstrate our dedication to both exceptional service and responsible operations. We are delighted that these small initiatives help achieve a broader sustainability aim. Start small if you own a small business and want to be sustainable. Even little modifications can produce significant impacts.

    Implement Recycling and Energy-Efficient Technologies

We have integrated sustainability practices into our business operations by implementing a comprehensive recycling program and transitioning to energy-efficient technologies. For example, we replaced all traditional lighting with LED bulbs, installed energy-efficient HVAC systems, and use programmable thermostats to reduce energy consumption. Additionally, we have a strict recycling policy for office materials and e-waste.

These initiatives have not only reduced our environmental footprint but also resulted in cost savings on utility bills. Furthermore, we encourage sustainable commuting options for employees, such as carpooling and public transportation incentives, to minimize our overall carbon footprint.
